Personal Ink maintains an excellent list of tattoo artists here. Some, like the artists in the film, offer both realistic areola and decorative tattoos while others specialize.

If you can’t find an artist in your area, we strongly recommend that you do your research and find an artist who has training and experience in this specific work.

Artist fees can range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand or more depending on the situation, size, and complexity of the design.

Some insurance plans cover nipple tattooing. Medicare often covers nipple tattooing (though it’s not required to do so under federal law). Medicaid coverage varies by state.

If you receive your nipple tattoo at a plastic surgeon’s office or hospital (whether from a member of the medical staff or a visiting tattoo artist), then that facility can usually handle the insurance claim for you. More details on insurance coverage can be found here.

If you don’t have insurance coverage and can’t afford to pay full price for a nipple tattoo, don’t worry! Some tattoo artists offer a discount or may have certain days throughout the year when they offer free nipple tattoos, such as the annual P.Ink Day.

Also, the nonprofit organization Sharsheret provides grants to help cover the cost of nipple tattooing for women in need in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, Illinois, and California.
