About Personal Ink

Personal Ink (P.ink) is a program of Fuck Cancer, dedicated to empowering women to reclaim their bodies after mastectomies. Through education and connection with experienced tattoo artists who can help, we are committed to ensuring that breast cancer never has to leave the last mark.

Every October we host “P.ink Days” where tattoo studios across North America close their doors for a day to create a free curated healing experience for recipients who have had mastectomies and are seeking closure through coverage of their scars with beautiful artwork. All tattoos are donated by talented and trained tattoo artists who are experienced in tattooing over scar tissue successfully.

A word from our leadership

About the film

Full Circle reveals how mastectomy tattoos empower breast cancer survivors to see past their scars to finally find the confidence to start dating after cancer, fix bad reconstructive work, and simply feel like themselves again. These tattoos change lives, and these women shared their stories to show others that breast cancer doesn’t have to leave the last mark.

Why make this film?

Mastectomies leave women scarred in more ways than one. Often, surgery involves removing nipples and areolae—and with them a profound sense of self.

Doctors can only help so much, typically with more invasive surgeries or basic cosmetic tattoos that look like a pepperoni.

Women deserve better.

Intimate art, transformative healing

Fortunately, there’s a solution: traditional tattoo artists, whose artistry and expertise offer a unique way for women to take control of their own healing.

Some of these women restore themselves with realistic nipple & areola tattoos. Others redefine themselves by covering their scars with beautiful works of art.

Whatever the design, these tattoos transform the women who get them—yet far too few are aware of this option.

FAQ

  • Personal Ink maintains an excellent list of tattoo artists here. Some, like the artists in the film, offer both realistic areola and decorative tattoos while others specialize.

If you can’t find an artist in your area, we strongly recommend that you do your research and find an artist who has training and experience in this specific work.

  • Artist fees can range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand or more depending on the situation, size, and complexity of the design.

  • Some insurance plans cover nipple tattooing. Medicare often covers nipple tattooing (though it’s not required to do so under federal law). Medicaid coverage varies by state.

If you receive your nipple tattoo at a plastic surgeon’s office or hospital (whether from a member of the medical staff or a visiting tattoo artist), then that facility can usually handle the insurance claim for you. More details on insurance coverage can be found here.

If you don’t have insurance coverage and can’t afford to pay full price for a nipple tattoo, don’t worry! Some tattoo artists offer a discount or may have certain days throughout the year when they offer free nipple tattoos, such as the annual P.Ink Day.

Also, the nonprofit organization Sharsheret provides grants to help cover the cost of nipple tattooing for women in need in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, Illinois, and California.

  • We used a variety of camera systems including RED Scarlet & Dragon, as well as the Sony FS7 and Phantom Miro for high framerate slow motion.
